A lot of fans and observers were expecting Conor McGregor to defeat Eddie Alvarez last night at UFC 205, but chances are, not too many believed it would go the way it did.

McGregor dropped Alvarez not long into the bout with a booming left hand, and although the latter recovered, he never got back into the fight. McGregor continued to crack Alvarez with big punches, and the wrestling game of the now former champ was never a factor. In round two, after Alvarez was sent to the deck one more time, the bout was called.

So what went wrong? While speaking to FOX Sports 1, here is some of what Alvarez had to say about the lopsided defeat (quote via MMA

“I think it was just kinda relaxed and I was just kinda like, ‘alright, it’s going to be relaxed, we’ll do it that way.’ I almost got lulled into his pace and got out of my own pace. He did a good job, hats off to him.”

“But I just boxed too much. I just boxed too much tonight, too much boxing.”

It was masterful performance from McGregor. No question. Alvarez has good boxing and a heavy right, but most people understood that a striking match would favor the Irish star.

Now it will be interesting to see what comes next for Alvarez, and if he can mount another title run. Folks have written off Alvarez in the past, and he came back to win UFC gold.

UFC 205 was hosted by Madison Square Garden in New York City.
