It remains to be seen what comes next for Nate Diaz, and by the sounds of it, it could be a while before we see the Stockton star fight again…
Diaz has yet to be booked for a bout, following his decision loss to Conor McGregor in August. After the UFC 202 bout, Diaz reported he only wanted a rubber match with McGregor. But since the latter won the lightweight title in November, there’s been more talk about McGregor facing a top lightweight contender next, like Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson.
Well, apparently there were reports that the UFC was looking at booking a bout between Nurmagomedov and Diaz for an interim, lightweight title. But, MMA Fighting says sources informed the outlet those reports are wrong, and when Diaz was contacted, he said this by text:
“I’m only fighting at lightweight for a big fight or 20 million just to take the call,” Diaz said. “Until then, I’m just living my life.”
And as far as a trilogy bout with McGregor? Diaz reportedly said this:
“I already beat him, and they aren’t paying enough to fight him again.”
So, as noted above, don’t be surprised if Diaz’s next fight doesn’t get worked out anytime soon. There’s big fights out there for him, no question, but can the UFC and Diaz come to terms?
The story also adds that the reasons Ferguson hasn’t been included in some of these more recent rumors about an interim title fight, is because there’s a contractual hangup. This is why Nurmagomedov was reportedly offered a bout with Aldo, but “The Eagle” has made it clear he wants to fight Ferguson.
