It remains to be seen what’s next for Dominick Cruz, but the storied bantamweight says only a title fight interests him at this juncture.
Cruz lost the 135 title to Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207 last month, which marked the first time in nearly a decade that “The Dominator” had been defeated. Due to Cruz’s lengthy run as WEC and then UFC champ, many have argued he deserves an immediate rematch. But, since TJ Dillashaw is coming off wins over contenders Raphael Assuncao and John Lineker, the former champ will face Garbrandt later this year.
Well, recently the aforementioned Assuncao earned a split decision win over Aljamain Sterling, and the contender expressed an interest in fighting Cruz next. But, here is what the latter had to say when asked about Assuncao’s proposition (quote via MMA Junkie):
“It’s not a question of if I’ll fight him,” Cruz said. “I fight the best in the world. I’m ready to fight for the belt. That’s what I’m in line for. That’s who I’m here to fight – the best. That would be the next guy who thinks they’re the champion, and I can take the belt from him. That’s not Assuncao, and I’m not the guy for him. … I’m fighting for the title when I come back, and that’s the end of it.”
There you have it. Now, will Cruz in fact be offered a shot at say the winner of Garbrandt – Dillashaw? It’s possible, particularly if Dillashaw wins, as Cruz holds a victory over him. But, considering that fight won’t go down until later this year, you would think the UFC will want Cruz to fight in the interim.
