Glover Teixeira was quickly and brutally taken out by Anthony Johnson in his last bout, but it sounds like the perennial contender isn’t dwelling on the defeat.
Teixeira faced Johnson at UFC 202 last August, and did so having won three straight fights. Johnson decked Teixeira with a massive right hand just 13 seconds into the fight, however, and that was that.
Well, Teixeira is returning to action tonight at UFC 208, as he’ll take on Jared Cannonier. While discussing his vicious loss to Johnson this week, here is some of what the heavy handed fighter had to say (quote via MMA Fighting):
“It was tough, of course, but we have to deal with this situation,” Teixeira said. “Anything can happen in a fight. I’m not the type of guy to think about it too much. Move on, don’t look back. It’s water under the bridge, it’s gone. I have to stay focused and train for my next fight.
“It was quick, so you can’t know for sure. It was a punch that landed, and it happens. It happened to me. It sucks, but I can’t mourn about it. It’s gone, let’s move on now.”
That type of defeat would haunt a lot of fighters, so it will be interesting to see how Teixeira performs moving forward. It does sound, however, like he’s mentally recovered from the loss.
Teixeira has also credited Cannonier leading up to their contest, and he’s noted that the latter is a dangerous opponent. So, it also appears like Teixeira’s not looking past Cannonier, even though he’s not a top ten ranked 205’er.
UFC 208 will take place in Brooklyn, New York.
