Star Boxing Trainer Wouldn’t Count Conor McGregor Out Versus Floyd Mayweather

Kelsey Mowatt

Everyone with a real understanding of combat sports will likely pick Floyd Mayweather to beat Conor McGregor in a boxing match, but one of the best boxing coaches in the game, won’t completely count the latter out.

The rumor mill has been running overtime in recent weeks about a Mayweather – McGregor bout, and the fight that at one point most people said would never happen, might in fact materialize. McGregor has said he thinks he’ll face Mayweather next, and recently the boxing star said they’re getting closer to a deal.

Well, recently renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and he was asked to weigh-in on the rumored match-up. While the boxing genius believes Mayweather will rule the day, Roach did have this to say (quote via MMA Fighting):

“He is a pretty good striker,” Roach said about McGregor. “The thing is Floyd is a great boxer. He’s really good at hitting and not getting hit and so forth. I think it would take a long time for Conor to get ready for a boxing match, a pure boxing match. But ya know, one punch can change everything. It’s the sport we’re in. I’m not gonna count him out completely. I think Mayweather is the favorite, yes, but I wouldn’t count anyone out. Because he throws, he throws hard and he’s not afraid to throw.”

There’s no question McGregor has a booming left, and even with boxing gloves on, no one wants to take one of his shots flush. But, the big question is, can he land a big bomb on Mayweather? Who is widely regarded as one of the best, defensive boxers to date?

First things first, of course, and that’s getting the fight booked. There’s a lot of chips that need to fall into the right place, so, the combat sports world continues to play the waiting game.
