Cody Garbrandt Says he “Broke” Dominick Cruz in Memorable, UFC 207 Scrap

Kelsey Mowatt

Dominick Cruz has said he hopes to challenge the winner of TJ Dillashaw – Cody Garbrandt, but according to the latter, the former 135 champ will never be the same following their encounter.

At UFC 207 in December, Garbrandt surprised many throughout the MMA world, by handing Cruz a decision loss and securing the bantamweight title. Although Garbrandt had impressed, and then some, leading up to the fight, Cruz was widely regarded as the best 135’er of all time. After all, this is a guy who hadn’t lost a fight since 2007.

Now, Garbrandt is coaching opposite of Dillashaw on TUF 25, and he will fight the former champ sometime in July. Garbrandt has repeatedly said he’ll give Cruz a rematch, but “No Love” clearly believes he has the star’s number (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I was very surprised with Dominick, all the sh*t talking he did,” Garbrandt said. “What he said he was gonna do to me, he wasn’t able to do that, so I was just waiting for him to get the rematch. Give him the rematch, give him the respect for being the most dominant bantamweight fighter in the world…

“I feel like Dominick doesn’t [have a fighter’s heart],” Garbrandt added. “I think I broke Dominick in that fight and truly don’t think Dominick will be the same.

It’s going to be interesting to see 1) who wins the Garbrandt – Dillashaw bout, and 2) if Cruz can win back the title. Recently Cruz was a guest on “The Joe Rogan Experience“, and he reported he’s taking some time to heal up from injuries, and that he wants to challenge for the belt later this year.

It will also be interesting to see if the UFC gives Cruz an immediate shot at the belt. Considering what he’s accomplished, it’s hard to argue against no?
