Middleweight contender Nate Marquardt will look to rebound from his recent setback when he likely returns against resurgent 185-pounder Alessio Sakara at UFC 116, while The Ultimate Fighter 10 runner-up Brendan Schaub is expected to face fellow heavyweight Chris Tuchscherer at the July 3 event in Las Vegas, according to Joe Ferraro.
After suffering a controversial split decision loss to Thales Leites in mid-2008, Marquardt (29-9-2) worked his way back into contention with three-straight wins, including a 21-second knockout of Demian Maia in August, but dropped a unanimous decision to upcoming title challenger Chael Sonnen in February.
Following a 3-4 start to his UFC career, the former light heavyweight Sakara (15-7) has won three-straight over Joe Vedepo, Leites, and most-recently James Irvin at last month’s UFC on Versus 1.
Schaub (5-1) suffered a first-round KO to Roy Nelson in the finals of TUF 10, but bounced back with a first-round TKO of Chase Gormley in March, while Tuchscherer (18-2), a training partner of heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, earned a majority decision over Tim Hague in February after dropping his UFC debut Gabriel Gonzaga last August.
UFC 116 is headlined by the anticipated return of heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar vs. interim title-holder Shane Carwin, and is expected to be co-headlined by Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama.
