One of the most anticipated lightweight fights in UFC history will not take place tomorrow after all.
Recently the UFC announced that Khabib Nurmagomedov has not been cleared to fight Tony Ferguson as scheduled, as a result of medical issues tied to weight cutting.
Several hours ago, reports started surfacing that Nurmagomedov had gone to the hospital, and that his bout with Ferguson was in jeopardy. A short time ago, the promotion announced that indeed, Nurmagomedov will no longer fight in the interim lightweight bout.
Here is part of the official statement that was posted at UFC.com:
UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov was transported to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center Thursday evening due to weight management medical issues. He was treated and has been discharged, UFC officials confirmed.
The scheduled interim lightweight championship bout between Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC 209 has been cancelled on the doctor’s recommendation.
Obviously this a massive, massive setback for the UFC, the lightweight division and Nurmagomedov. Hopefully the latter is going to be okay, and this latest incident is sure to spark another round of debate, regarding weight cutting.
Ferguson successfully made weight for the contest, as he tipped the scales at 154.5 pounds.
The headliner for UFC 209 is still in place, as welterweight champ Tyron Woodley came in at 170 pounds for the bout, and Stephen Thompson weighed 160. The two fought to a majority draw in November.
