Both Overeem and Hunt kept busy with kicks and punches from the opening bell. At one point, it looked like Hunt was going to score a win, after he wobbled Overeem with a couple of hard elbows. Overeem started pushing Hunt to the cage to work from the clinch, and he finished Hunt with a thumping knees to the head in round three.
Well, after the memorable fight, Dana White revealed that Overeem was hospitalized the day before, due to food poisoning. While discussing his illness, Overeem had this to say (quote via MMA Junkie):
“We went through all the steps necessary,” Overeem said. “I got really sick and yesterday at the weigh-ins I was out. I was low-energy. I put on my acting face, but I had like zero energy. If I felt today as I felt yesterday I would not have been able to perform. I went to the hospital, got an IV, took something to help me sleep. I could get some food in yesterday before sleeping and recovered kind of OK.”
It was a big win for Overeem, and even more so, now that we know what he had to deal with going in. The Dutch fighter was competing for the first time since September, when he was knocked out by heavyweight champ, Stipe Miocic.
If you’re wondering, Overeem’s team did receive clearance to use an IV. Although IV use is typically banned, it is allowed in certain situations.
