There aren’t many in the game who can promote a fight and chuck insults better than Michael Bisping, and now that he’s going to face Georges St-Pierre, “The Count” is revving up the trash talk.
The UFC held a press conference on Friday to promote the planned fight, and Mr. Bisping wasted little time before he started sending verbal shots at the Canadian star. Well, following Tyron Woodley’s decision win over Stephen Thompson at UFC 209, which was a fight that’s been widely panned, Bisping told TMZ this (quote via MMA Fighting):
“Well, let’s be honest, it was tactical but it wasn’t the most satisfying fight,” said Bisping. “If they’re the best welterweights in the world, then I should f–k up GSP. That’s a fact. If they’re the best welterweights in the world then GSP is going to a funeral pretty quick.”
Yup. This is why Bisping is one of the more polarizing fighters in MMA. By the time his bout with GSP rolls around, chances are a sizeable portion of the former welterweight champ’s fanbase is going to loathe the middleweight champ.
Of course, the comments above were mostly a shot at Thompson and Woodley. Leading up to the bout, Woodley argued he was the best welterweight to date, and thus, Bisping also said this:
“Best welterweight of all time? I like Tyron but all I saw there was 20 minutes of backing up. You’ve got to go forwards to win a fight. It was a tactical fight, Tyron won, congratulations to him. Well done.”
The Bisping – St-Pierre bout has yet to receive an official date, but UFC President Dana White has said he’s hoping to book it during International Fight Week in July.
