Although Tony Ferguson wish Khabib Nurmagomedov a speedy and full recovery, following the latter’s withdrawal from their highly anticipated fight, “El Cucuy” believes “The Eagle” acted unprofessionally…
Ferguson and Nurmagomedov were supposed to fight for the interim 155 title at UFC 209 on Saturday, but the latter ran into medical issues while trying to cut weight, and wasn’t cleared to fight. After the devastating news was made public, Ferguson wished Nurmagomedov well, and also reported “let’s do it again”.
Well, since then, Ferguson appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and while the dangerous fighter is still interested in fighting Nurmagomedov, he made it clear he’s not happy with the contender. Here is some of what Ferguson had to say, regarding what went down (quote via MMA Fighting):
“I would love to fight Khabib, but there’s no guarantee he’s going to show up and make the weight.” Ferguson said. “I found out, too, the he was eating tiramisu, a couple weeks ago on Embedded. I’m like, what is this guy doing? Really? It’s plain disrespectful, it unprofessional.”
“My next fight needs to be a title fight. I’ve earned every single right of the way,” Ferguson added. “Somebody that’s guaranteed to show up. I’ve done all my homework, I’ve done, made my ends me for this fight. But if we’re talking Khabib, there’s got to be some sort of guarantee or insurance for this, man. It’s a crazy bug that I can’t squash and its a tough pill to swallow right now.”
Now, we don’t really know what went wrong with Nurmagomedov’s cut. But, it’s not surprising to see that Ferguson’s frustrated. After all, this is the third time a bout between the two has been cancelled, and this last booking would have been a nice payday for both. Not to mention the fact it was supposed to determine who’s the interim champ, who then, is supposed to fight Conor McGregor (which would be huge).
It’s going to be interesting to see what the UFC does next here. No one’s expecting McGregor back anytime before the fall, so, if Nurmagomedov is ready to go in a couple of months, hopefully, they rebook him to fight Ferguson…”guarantee” and all.
