UFC FN 106: Main Card Results & Bout Recaps

UFC Fortaleza

UFC Fight Night 106 is underway in Fortaleza, Brazil, which will feature the legendary Vitor Belfort taking on the rising Kelvin Gastelum in the headliner.

The results and recaps for the main card bouts are below.

Michel Prazeres def. Josh Burkman via submission (north-south choke) R1, 1:42

Jeremy Kennedy def. Rony Jason via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-27)

Paulo Borrachinha def. Garreth McLellan via TKO (strikes) R1, 1:17

Sergio Moraes def. Davi Ramos via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Kevin Lee def. Francisco Trinaldo via submission (rear-naked-choke) R2, 3:12

Tim Means  vs. Alex Oliveira 

Oliveira took Means down several times in the opening round, but near the end of the opening frame, the latter reversed and controlled from on top. In round two, however, Oliveira took Means to the mat once again, and worked his way into a fight ending, rear-naked-choke.

Bethe Correia vs. Marion Reneau 

Correia appeared to move ahead in the opening two rounds, by mixing in well timed takedowns. In round three, however, Reneau rocked Correia with a headkick, and proceeded to dominate the round. After the fight, the judges ruled the fight a majority draw, with one judge scoring it for Reneau.

Ray Borg  vs. Jussier Formiga 

Both flyweights kept a busy pace in the early going, and both men largely relied on their boxing. Through round two, the gas tanks of both Formiga and Borg continued to hold up well, but neither man was able to land any fight turning strikes. In round three, Borg scored a takedown early on, and although Formiga worked his way into dominant positions, Borg reversed and finished the round on top. Close fight.

Edson Barboza vs. Beneil Dariush 

Dariush pressed forward from the opening bell, as a means to negate Barboza’s featured legkicks. Early on, Dariush appeared to be getting the better of the striking exchanges, but in round two, Barboza started to find the target more often. Then, as Dariush lunged forward, Barboza caught him with a crushing flying knee that KO’d the lightweight instantly. Another jaw dropping win for Barboza.

Mauricio Rua  vs. Gian Villante 

Both light-heavyweights were loading up on their punches early on. Villante cracked Rua with a big left hook, but the latter proceeded to drop the American with a right hand not long after.  In round two, the trend of power shots over volume continued. In round three, Rua rocked Villante with a check hook, and then finished the deal with flurry of punches. Another big win for the former champ.

Vitor Belfort vs. Kelvin Gastelum 

Belfort fired off some spinning kicks early on, but Gastelum floored the legend with a booming left. Belfort, however, managed to cover up and got back to his feet. Several moments later, Gastelum dropped Belfort with another huge left, and referee “Big” John McCarthy waved off the fight.
