It wasn’t that long ago when Dana White said there was a better chance of him playing for the New England Patriots at the Super Bowl, than Conor McGregor boxing Floyd Mayweather, but the UFC President has changed his mind…
Talk about the long rumored bout spiked once again earlier this week, when it was reported the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas has been reserved for the proposed fight on June 10th. But, White dismissed that was the case while speaking to TMZ, by saying there was no target date for the bout, and that the fight was “nowhere near” to being signed.
Now, while that all may still be true, White reportedly said this about McGregor – Mayweather during an appearance on Wednesday’s “Conan” (quote via MMA Fighting):
“I do think it’s gonna happen,” White said. “I think it’s going to be a tough deal, because obviously [there are] a lot of egos involved in this deal and a lot of people, so that always makes it tougher. On the flip side, there’s so much money involved. I just don’t see how it doesn’t happen.”
More than a few people have argued that the bout will take place, just because it will generate so much money, as White noted. But to hear the UFC President say this, is pretty remarkable.
One could certainly deduce from these comments that the UFC is an active participant in the talks, or that there’s no plans by McGregor’s camp to try and attempt to circumvent his contract with the promotion. Previously, McGregor has said he wants the UFC to be involved in the bout, but that if necessary, he was confident the Ali Act would allow him to box Mayweather without the promotion being on board.
