UFC 210: Daniel Cormier Reflects on Facing Anthony Johnson’s Fearsome Power

UFC 210

Not many fighters have made it through a fight with Anthony Johnson in recent years, much less defeat the feared slugger, but Daniel Cormier’s about to try accomplishing it twice.

Cormier will look to defend the 205 belt against Johnson at UFC 210, which will go down on April 8th in Buffalo. The light-heavyweights fought for the vacant title back in 2015, and Cormier took home the belt, by submitting Johnson in round three. Since then, Johnson has bombed out Jimi Manuwa, Ryan Bader and most recently, Glover Teixeira.

Well, recently Cormier was a guest on Jon Anik and Kenny Florian’s podcast, and the champ had this to say, while reflecting on his scrap with Johnson (quote via MMA Fighting):

“I have to be careful in the first seven minutes because the reality is, I’ve felt him over the course of 14 minutes now and I know the difference in his power from minute one when he dropped me, to minute 13. So I can base that on experience. I felt him at minute 13 and granted, he’s still very powerful, but it isn’t that same explosive power that’s there in minute one, two, three, four, of the very first round. So I’ve really taken into account the beginning of the fight, being very aware, being ready to go from the start, and making sure I’m implementing my game plan from the first bell all the way until I finish the fight.”

Yup. “Rumble” is one of the most dangerous fighters in the game, particularly during a fight’s opening minutes. Case in point, he needed less than two minutes, total, yes total, to put away Teixeira and Bader.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this fight unfolds. Cormier has said he’s going to leave his wrestling out of the second bout, but we’ll see if that’s actually the case.

UFC 210 will be hosted by Buffalo’s KeyBank Center.
