Anthony Johnson retired from pro MMA this past weekend having never crossed paths with Jon Jones, but if he ever competes again, he’d be up to fight “Bones”.
As you surely know, Johnson shocked fans around the world this past weekend, by announcing he’s retiring from fighting at the age of 33. “Rumble”, who is no longer going by the nickname apparently, announced the news following his submission loss to Daniel Cormier.
Johnson and Jones were supposed to fight back in 2015, before the latter’s well documented, hit-and-run incident, which cancelled the bout. Due to the abilities of each man, it’s a match-up that fans have long wanted to see. Jones has also said that he wanted to test himself against the heavy handed fighter.
Well, during the post-fight presser at UFC 210 this weekend, Johnson had this to say about the former champ (quote via MMA Mania):
“Day in and day out, people are always talking about Jon Jones and myself fighting each other, and it just never happened,” Johnson said. “Maybe if I decide to come back one day, we can fight at heavyweight or something like that.”
That sounds about right huh? As it stands right now, however, it doesn’t sound like Johnson has any plans to fight again. The feared striker seems pretty content with his decision to hang up the gloves, but hey, you never know. There’s certainly been plenty of fighters who retire and then return to the ring / cage.
