Tony Ferguson Tells Nate Diaz to Step up and Fight or “Retire”

Kelsey Mowatt

Tony Ferguson has been calling for a fight with Nate Diaz in recent weeks, and it sounds like “El Cucuy” is getting a wee bit frustrated the bout hasn’t been signed.

Following Khabib Nurmagomedov’s disastrous, last minute withdrawal from UFC 209, Ferguson has made it clear that he wants to scrap Diaz. The lightweight contender still wants to fight Nurmagomedov, but the latter has said he’s focusing on his health, and that he wants to fight in September. As a result, Ferguson, who has yet to compete in 2017, is hoping to get a fight in sooner than later.

Recently the Las Vegas Review – Journal caught up with Ferguson, and once gain, the well rounded fighter called out Diaz (quote via MMA Fighting):

“I’m down for the battle of California,” Ferguson said. “[Diaz] wants to represent 209. I’m from 805 in the Oxnard area. I think, obviously, my hands are a lot better. I think this game is about the glory and not all about the money. Obviously you have to make you piece in this industry but s**t, Nate, if you don’t want to fight, move on. Retire. Go do something else because we’re here to fight in this industry and everybody else is taken so Nate would be the next one up.”

Now, obviously, from a skills and stylistic standpoint, who wouldn’t want to see Ferguson – Diaz right? But, both Nate and his brother Nick don’t seem too eager to fight, unless it can deliver a big payday, which Ferguson alluded to. Will this scrap happen? It’s kind of hard to imagine it getting signed unfortunately. So, Ferguson could find himself waiting it out for the Nurmagomedov fight after all.
