UFC FN 108: Artem Lobov Reveals he Asked UFC to Release Him Back in 2016

Artem Lobov is one of the headliners for tonight’s UFC Fight Night 108 card in Nashville, but it wasn’t long ago when the featherweight was telling the UFC to release him…

Lobov has been booked for a bout with Cub Swanson today, following decision victories over Chris Avila and Teruto Ishihara. But, back in the spring of 2016, Lobov was coming off a UD loss to Alex White, which followed a decision defeat to Ryan Hall in the finals of TUF 22. The defeat to White had dropped Lobov’s record to 11-12-1.

Well, recently “The Russian Hammer” spoke to NewsTalk about his fight tonight with Swanson. While doing so, the 30 year-old revealed the following:

“I messaged the UFC and told them to release me,” said Lobov, while reflecting on the request he made following his loss to White.

“I explained that I understood that I had two losses and if they were going to cut me it would be fair. I told them I had found a champion outside of the UFC to fight, who I felt was the best unsigned talent outside of the promotion.

“I was confident that the other promotion wanted to put the fight on, but then the UFC came back to me with another matchup. I took it because UFC is where I want to be.”

How about that? Obviously things have turned out well for Lobov, as he’s about to compete in the main event of a UFC card. Although, some folks, including Swanson, have argued that the rugged fighter’s headlining status is on account of the fact that Lobov’s a teammate of superstar, Conor McGregor. If Lobov can take out Swanson tonight, the #4 ranked featherweight in the promotion, however, a lot of his critics will be silenced.

UFC FN 108 will be hosted by Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. The main card will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 in the United States.
