Daniel Cormier to Jon Jones: “There Are no Tune-Up Fights in The UFC”

Kelsey Mowatt

Recently it was reported that Daniel Cormier – Jon Jones II is in the works for UFC 214, but based off comments the light-heavyweight champ recently made, it’s clearly not a done deal yet.

Since Cormier submitted Anthony Johnson for a second time earlier this month, there’s been no shortage of speculation, as to who “DC” will fight next. Jones is eligible to return to the Octagon in July, and Dana White has said the former champ can fight Cormier if he’s ready.  There’s also Jimi Manuwa waiting in the wings as well. But so far, Cormier’s next title defense has yet to be announced.

Well, on the latest episode of “UFC Tonight”, Cormier sent the following challenge Jones’ way (quote via MMA Junkie):

“Take the fight with me, Jon Jones,” Cormier said. “There are no tune-up fights in the UFC. Try to get your title back. Come meet your boy ‘DC,’ come get this money. Let’s get money together and give the people in Anaheim a show. No tune-up for Jon Jones, he gets to come and get beat by me this time. We’re fighting right now or he doesn’t get to fight me. It’s my rules, I’m the champ now.”

As I, and others have said recently, it is hard to imagine Jones electing to go with a warm-up fight. After all, we’re talking about one of the greatest fighters the game has ever known, and Cormier is his biggest rival. It could be, however, that Jones and his team are hoping for a little bit more time, and would prefer to face “DC” later in the summer. UFC 214 is scheduled for July 29th in Anaheim, California.

Chances are we’ll hear something new on Cormier – Jones II soon.
