Tony Ferguson Explains Why Nate Diaz is Like a “Bad Ex-Girlfriend”

Kelsey Mowatt

It doesn’t seem like Nate Diaz is overly interested in fighting Tony Ferguson next, but “El Cucuy” continues to call out the Stockton star.

Following Khabib Nurmagomedov’s unfortunate withdrawal from UFC 209, Ferguson has repeatedly said he’s interested in fighting Diaz. Especially since it doesn’t look like Nurmagomedov’s is going to fight until after this summer.

Now, on paper, Ferguson – Diaz is a very compelling fight. But, so far, we haven’t heard any interest from Diaz or his camp in taking the bout. Ever since Diaz lost his rematch to Conor McGregor last August, the outspoken fighter has said he either wants a rubber match with the lightweight champ, or a big, big fight.

Well, recently Ferguson’s manager made the case for why Diaz should fight his client, and “El Cucuy” also said this on a recent episode of the 5ive Rounds podcast (quote via MMA Fighting):

“He’s all on McGregor’s [expletive],” Ferguson said. “He’s like a f**king bad ex-girlfriend. Literally, a bad taste in somebody’s mouth if you win or you lose, you’ve gotta move on, dude. If you really want that money fight then you’re probably hurting for money. Literally, if you have that money fight, you should pay your taxes and then move on. This is a fighter sport. You’re ranked number what, eight? Ninth? Don’t you want to be better than that? S**t, dude you beat is ranked higher than you. Don’t you want an opportunity at the belt? Come on. I’m skipping a couple names but I’m giving you an opportunity. I’m doing you a favor, I’m not doing myself a f**king favor. I’m giving you a chance but if you don’t want it, that’s cool. I’ll give somebody else a chance.”

Wow. It will be interesting to see if Ferguson’s repeated attacks on Diaz work. While a bout with Ferguson likely wouldn’t deliver a huge check to Diaz, it is an opportunity for him to get right back in the title shot mix at 155. Assuming, of course, he even wants to fight at lightweight again.

Ferguson also said that he’d be interested in moving up to 170 to face the champ Tyron Woodley. But with Demian Maia – Jorge Masvidal on deck for May 13th, that fight seems very unlikely.
