Talks between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather for their long rumored, boxing match must be progressing, as Dana White’s reported they had a date picked for the all-star fight.
The UFC President attended last night’s boxing match between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, which saw the latter lose the fight via unanimous decision.
After Canelo was awarded the fight, it was announced that he’ll throw down with Gennady Golovkin on September 16th. If you follow boxing, then you know that’s a huge, huge, fight. As, Canelo and “GGG” are two of the biggest names in the sport.
“We just lost our date to ‘Canelo’ and ‘GGG,’ but good, that’s a good fight,” White said. “I’ll be at that one, too.”
Now sure, White didn’t say that McGregor – Mayweather was finalized, but it’s pretty interesting to hear they had a date picked. September 16th would have made sense, as McGregor has said before he was targeting September for the bout, as a result of the birth of his first son. White also relayed this:
“Floyd wants this fight, and we want to try and make it, so we’ll see what happens,” White said. “Listen, Floyd is one of the best ever in the history of the game, and Conor is one of the best ever in the history of our game, so people want to see it, and I’m always into making fights that people want to see.”
So, considering GGG – Canelo is September 16th, you would think that McGregor – Mayweather would likely get pushed to November or December? Maybe October, although, that would mean asking fans to shell out for two big PPVs in a short period of time, not to mention UFC cards that will take place around then.
