Daniel Cormier Weighs-In on Why Fans Have Been Cheering For Jon Jones, Not Him

Kelsey Mowatt

It seems like a lot of fans have turned on Daniel Cormier, in terms of his well documented rivalry with Jon Jones, and “DC” has offered some opinions at to why that is.

Unlike Jones, Cormier has not been the subject of any scandals or run-ins with the law. But in the past year or so, the light-heavyweight champ has been on the receiving end of boos, when Jones is in the vicinity. Recently Cormier was a guest on the Edge and Christian Podcast of Awesomeness, and he had this to say about the subject (quote via MMA Fighting):

“People don’t want to be told, ‘I’m good so you should cheer for me.’ Jon Jones is a guy that has made a lot of mistakes, so maybe people relate to him more. They go, ‘Forget this Daniel Cormier goody two-shoes, him and his kids and his family. I want the guy that does coke and parties and crashes cars. That’s the guy I want.’

“Maybe I’m not cool enough because I go to work, I fight, when I’m not fighting I go back and I go to my kids’ soccer and baseball games. That’s what I do. I go to wrestling. I’m not out partying. I’m not out doing all kinds of crazy stuff. Maybe I’m just too boring but I’m fine with it. I like my life.”

Could be. Although, some Cormier critics would likely also point out that the champ has stepped up his trash talking game. So, that could also be why some fans have decided to root against him. It’s hard to say.

Cormier also said that he hopes his rematch with Jones gets signed for July 29th, at UFC 214 in Anaheim. Recently it was reported the promotion’s targeting that date for the fight.

Jones and Cormier fought for the first time in January, 2015, and the latter lost the fight via unanimous decision.
