If Cody Garbrandt is unable to fight this summer, as a result of back issues he’s having, TJ Dillashaw would love to throw down with Demetrious Johnson. Sounds good right? The only problem is that the flyweight champ’s not too keen on the idea.
Dillashaw is currently booked to fight the bantamweight champ on July 8th, but, this is assuming Garbrandt’s healthy enough to fight. Recently Dana White told MMA Junkie that the promotion’s sending Garbrandt to a facility in Germany, which has helped many all-star athletes recover from injuries. White’s very optimistic that Garbrandt will be good to go.
Well, Dillashaw informed White that if “No Love” can’t compete, then he’d like to move down to 125 to face Johnson. The angle being that “Mighty Mouse” would need to get through him, in order to set a new title defense record of 11. When Johnson was asked about the possibility of fighting Dillshaw, however, he told MMA Fighting this:
“There’s other challengers in the division with more wins and on a winning streak. This wouldn’t be a super-fight because TJ is not a champion. He’s just a 135er coming down to 125 to skip the line that other flyweight competitors have worked hard to climb.
“Now, if he was a champion, there’d be something there.”
Dillashaw caught wind of Johnson’s response, and he noted that the 125 division’s #1 contender, Joseph Benavidez, is injured. As a result, Dillashaw has this take on the situation:
“He needs to understand that this will be his biggest fight possible to make the most money, since he was so worried about making money after his last fight. I have tons of respect for DJ as a fighter and a person. I’m not trying to talk trash, I just want to fight the best. Let’s glove up and make us some serious money. No one wants to see him fight someone he’s beaten or never heard of to break the record…”
Johnson’s concerns are understandable, particularly in an age where rankings continually are being punted to make other fights. But really, in this situation, Johnson – Dillashaw certainly seems like a great way to get some big time buzz behind the division no?
