Demetrious Johnson typically makes headlines for what he does in the cage, rather than what he says outside of it. But recent comments the UFC’s flyweight champ made about Ronda Rousey are likely going to raise some eyebrows.
Johnson recently sat down with Sports Illustrated, following his submission win over Wilson Reis last month, which left him with 10 title defenses. If Johnson defends the 125 title belt once more, he will set a new record for the promotion.
During the interview, Johnson relayed that he can’t really say how setting a new record yet will feel like, because he might lose. Then, after noting that he visualizes losing, Johnson had this to say about Rousey:
“You look at Ronda Rousey. You got your ass beat, grow the f— up. It happens. It’s mixed martial arts. I don’t want to be like that. If I lose, I’ll be like, I lost.
Yeah, everybody has”, added Johnson, while discussing the fact that many great fighters have been defeated. “Everybody f—ing loses. It’s part of the sport. Grow up. Look, Ronda, you lost two f—ing fights in a row, and you made more f—ing money than the women’s roster. You’ll be fine, don’t worry about it.”
It will be interesting to see how these comments are met by Rousey’s supporters, or the former bantamweight champ herself. Although, Rousey hasn’t been saying much publicly as of late, so it would be kind of surprising if she responded to Johnson.
Since Rousey was taken out by Amanda Nunes last December, she’s been keeping a low profile and the star hasn’t said if she”ll return to the cage or not.
