If you’ve had a discussion lately as to who is the best light-heavyweight in the world, chances are the name Jon Jones was mentioned a lot, as well as Daniel Cormier, or possibly Alexander Gustafsson. But, according to Jimi Manuwa, he and the latter, are in fact, the best at 205…
Manuwa hasn’t been shy about calling for a title shot and delivering warnings to the champ Cormier, since he bombed out Corey Anderson in March. As a result of that win, the British fighter is currently sitting in the #3 ranking in the light-heavyweight division (it should be noted, however, that Jones isn’t currently ranked due to his USADA suspension, which will end in July. If he was, Mr. Manuwa would almost certainly be ranked #4).
Well, Manuwa attended UFC FN 109 this past weekend, which saw his teammate, Gustafsson, take out fellow contender Glover Teixeira. While speaking to MMA Junkie, Manuwa had this to say about him and “The Mauler”.
“I see all these light heavyweights walking around this week, and I’d destroy all of them – I’d destroy everybody,” Manuwa said. “Me and Alex are the best in the world. We’ve got such a wicked team, I feel unbeatable.”
That’s quite the statement. Now does Manuwa truly believe it? He might. After all, the “Poster Boy” hits like a truck, so there’s no doubt that he could end any fighter’s night with one punch.
This aside, it will be interesting to see who Manuwa will face next. If Gustafsson had lost to Teixeira last weekend, Manuwa would have taken a step forwards to securing a title shot. But with the prospect of either Jones – Gustafsson II, or Cormier – Gustafsson II materializing later this year, one would think the Swedish star is next in line for a championship fight.
