Strikeforce newcomer Jan Finney will challenge 145-pound women’s champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos for the title in her Strikeforce debut on June 26 at “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum” in San Jose, California.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker announced the matchup following Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery”, and also confirmed that former lightweight champ Josh Thomson will return at the Showtime-televised event and could face Lyle Beerbohm, who must still be cleared from his Saturday victory over Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro.
After a 4-7 start to her career that included losses to notables Julie Kedzie, Shayna Baszler, Miesha Tate, and Erin Toughill, Finney (8-7) has rebounded with four-straight wins, including a split decision over then-17-2 Adrienna Jenkins in her most-recent fight in March.
“Cyborg” (9-1) scored a first-round knockout of Gina Carano in August to claim the vacant title, then defended the belt in January with a third-round TKO of Marloes Coenen.
“Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum” is headlined by the return of top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko vs. Fabricio Werdum and also features a rematch between former middleweight champ Cung Le and Scott Smith.
