Recently Demetrious Johnson has accused Dana White and the UFC of mistreatment, and trying to bully him into a bout with TJ Dillashaw, and not surprisingly, the promotion’s president is denying the allegations.
Ever since Dillashaw floated the idea of the latter moving down to flyweight to fight Johnson, “Mighty Mouse” has argued the former 135 champ doesn’t deserve a title shot at 125. More recently, Johnson has reported he’s willing to fight Dillashaw, but that he wants financial guarantees if the latter can’t make weight. He also said White threatened to close the flyweight division, if Johnson doesn’t take the bout with Dillashaw.
Well, recently TMZ caught up with White, and the UFC President denied that the promotion has been mistreating him. In addition, White also said this:
“He didn’t want Pay-Per-View. He wanted upfront money, no Pay-Per-View. He wasn’t very confident in his abilities to sell Pay-Per-Views. He has the lowest-selling Pay-Per-View in the history of the UFC in the modern era.”
“The media claims he’s the pound for pound best fighter in the world. I think Conor McGregor is the pound for pound best fighter in the world.”
Now, the statement re: McGregor is no doubt going to rile up some folks in the hardcore base. While it’s true McGregor has fought at 145, 155 and 170 during his UFC run, Johnson has defended the flyweight title 10 times, and is arguably the most skilled fighter in the game, overall.
And what about the allegation that White threatened to shut down the flyweight division? Well, White said that they’ve been thinking about doing that “for years”….So, ya. Here’s hoping that doesn’t happen. Hopefully sooner than later, casual fans come to the realization that the flyweight division consistently provides some of the best fights.
