Most folks from the boxing world are predicting that Floyd Mayweather is going to have his way with Conor McGregor, but Tyson Fury evidently isn’t a member of that camp.
If you don’t follow boxing, then you may not know that Fury is a former heavyweight champ, and that he’s also one of the more outspoken and polarizing pugilists in the game. Well, recently the massive heavyweight was asked to weigh-in on Mayweather – McGregor, while talking to iFL TV, and here’s some of what Fury had to say (quotes via Bloody Elbow):
“I think Conor McGregor will knock him out in the first 35 seconds, like he did to Jose Aldo,” Fury said.
“I think McGregor will do him inside one round. C’mon McGregor!”
“It’ll be good for boxing if McGregor chinned him,” Fury furthered. “I think it would be great for the real people of the world.”
Now, if McGregor does take out Mayweather in 35 seconds, well, the combat sports world will be turned right side over. After all, Mayweather has never lost once in 49, professional boxing bouts, and McGregor has yet to compete in one, professional boxing match.
Does this mean it can’t happen? No. But, as people from boxing and MMA alike have noted, Mayweather is one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time. McGregor can’t set up his big left hand with kicks, etc, like he can in MMA, and further, they will be wearing 10 ounce gloves…
But, obviously folks from McGregor’s camp see it otherwise, similar to Fury. Case in point, recently McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh argued that Mayweather will be facing someone who doesn’t follow the same patterns of boxers, who can “deploy” other ways of fighting, and isn’t “one bit intimidated”.
We shall see. Mayweather – McGregor is booked for August 26th in Las Vegas; however, the venue has yet to be finalized.
