In recent weeks, Georges St-Pierre has still been campaigning for a bout with Michael Bisping, but Dana White’s reporting the former welterweight champ will fight for the 170 belt next…
As you know, earlier this year the UFC announced that GSP would fight the middleweight champ Bisping, in the Canadian’s long awaited return to the cage. But, after St-Pierre reported he couldn’t fight until November, White said the bout was off.
Well, since then, both GSP and Bisping have continued to push for a fight later this year. But, while speaking to MMA Junkie recently, White reported this:
“Georges and I talked a couple days ago when he was in Vegas,” White said. “Georges is saying he wants to fight; we’ll get this thing figured out. We’re talking about Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia. These two are going to fight soon. That will free up the 170-pound champion for Georges St-Pierre to return and try to regain his belt.”
There you have it. Now that it’s been reported Woodley will defend the belt against Maia at UFC 214, July 29th, this makes sense. Certainly more sense than having GSP move up to a weight class, that he’s never competed for in the UFC, and having him fight for the title.
