Daniel Cormier is booked to fight Jon Jones again at UFC 214, but after that, it seems pretty clear the 205 champ has no interest in fighting Jimi Manuwa.
Manuwa started calling for a title fight with Cormier, following his emphatic, KO win over Corey Anderson in March. Manuwa and Comrmier started to war via the media, but, eventually Cormier was booked to fight Jones on July 29th. Then Manuwa was signed to face Volkan Oezdemir that same night.
Well, recently Cormier was a guest on “The MMA Hour”, and the champ revealed that he was initially offered a bout with Manuwa. But, Cormier promptly told Dana White he was only interested in facing Mr. Jones (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“And I badgered him (White) and I badgered him, and I go, ‘tell me he’s ready to go,’ and he’s like, ‘I’m talking to him.’ So I go, ‘tell me he’s going to do it,’ and he goes, ‘well, I’m talking to him, we’re going get this figured out.’ And after about a week of me just badgering him, Dana goes, ‘DC calm down, I’m working on it.’ And finally it was Jones. It had to be Jones. Ariel, I want fights that get me going.
“‘Rumble’ Johnson, it was like, ‘is he really going to do it this time, can he get one on me and knock me out?’ So that’s the stuff that gets my juices going. Can Jon Jones do what he did last time and beat me again? That’s what get my juices going, or otherwise I’ll just do TV, you know? They tell me, ‘you got to fight Jimi Manuwa,’ and I’m like, ‘for what? This dude has no chance, come on.’”
So, it doesn’t sound like Cormier has plans to face Manuwa, although, that could change if he gets by Jones and the latter bombs out Oezdemir. It should also be noted that Alexander Gustafsson is waiting in the wings, and due to his tightly contested, decision loss to Cormier in 2015, that rematch is also very possible.
UFC 214 will go down on July 29th in Anaheim, California.
