Even before the highly anticipated, boxing match was finalized, everyone and their dog in combat sports, was weighing in on Mayweather vs. McGregor. The consensus is that since Mayweather is one of the greatest boxers of all time, and because he may be the greatest defensive boxer to date, McGregor has little chance of winning. That chance, according to most, is due to the fact that McGregor hits like a truck.
But, there have certainly been some who have shot down the idea that McGregor even has a puncher’s chance. Well, during a recent episode of ESPN’s 5ive Rounds Podcast, Alvarez had this to say about those folks (quote via MMA Fighting):
“Conor has about three or four rounds to get this done. . . Within those four rounds, if you don’t think Conor can knock this guy out, you’re an idiot or you just don’t know fighting because it can very well happen. If he doesn’t get it done by then, then it could look very one-sided. The technical boxing of Floyd Mayweather is enough to make it look really one-sided for him. But Conor, there is a very real chance that he can put him away.”
There you have it. Now, it’s hard to outright disagree with the former UFC champ here. To say McGregor absolutely, cannot KO Mayweather is ridiculous. The Irish star’s punching power is well documented, and McGregor’s striking style is certainly not something Mayweather has dealt with in the boxing ring.
But, if you want to argue that McGregor has a good chance of knocking out Mayweather, that’s a whole other argument.
Alvarez faced McGregor last November, and was stopped by the latter in the second round.
