After cruising through Jimi Manuwa at UFC 214, Volkan Oezdemir is campaigning for a scrap with Jon Jones, yes, before the latter fights Alexander Gustafsson for a second time.
Oezdemir needed just 42 seconds to take out Manuwa on Saturday night, and that win followed a 28 second, stoppage victory over another 205 contender, Misha Cirkunov, in May. Prior to that, Oezdemir joined the UFC in February, and earned a split decision win over Ovince Saint Preux.
So ya, “No Time” has been making some serious waves in a short amount of time, and as a result, following UFC 214 he had this to say about a title shot (quotes via Bloody Elbow):
“I better be (next in line), because Gustafsson fought [Jones],” Oezdemir said. “I’m fresh, I’m here, I’m new. See what I just did. Right now, it’s all about momentum, so if [Jones] goes to heavyweight to fight Brock Lesnar, it’s killing the momentum, too. I think we need to build up the fight, and I think I’ll be a really, really good opponent for him.”
“Gustafsson was the No. 1 contender for a while. He has history with Jon Jones, and I think fans want to see the rematch. That’s four years ago. That’s a long time. Maybe it’s time for some new blood.”
It’s not surprising to hear Oezdemir saying this. After all, he has defeated three top ten, light-heavyweights now, and he needed less than two minutes, total, to defeat Manuwa and Cirkunov. So, there’s no doubt he has a lot of momentum behind him.
But, while Gustafsson’s epic bout with Jones did take place back in 2013, “The Mauler” is a bigger name than Oezdemir, and there’s still a ton of fans who want to see him fight “Bones” again. Plus, Gustafsson’s coming off a ridiculously, impressive win over long time contender, Glover Teixeira.
So, it would be pretty, pretty surprising if the UFC went with Oezdemir over Gustafsson.
