Nick Diaz Outlines Why Conor McGregor Can Put up “Somewhat of a Fight” Against Floyd Mayweather

Kelsey Mowatt

A lot of fans and pundits believe Floyd Mayweather is going to have his way with Conor McGregor, when they throw hands on August 26th, but Nick Diaz believes the contest might be competitive.

Although McGregor is the UFC’s lightweight champ and one of the most dangerous strikers on the promotion’s roster, Mayweather is a heavy favorite to win their upcoming, boxing match. After all, McGregor has never competed in a professional, boxing bout, while Mayweather is 49-0, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest boxers of this generation. Further, although Mayweather is past his prime and is 40 year’s old, many experts believe he’s one of the best defensive fighters to ever lace up the gloves.

Well, recently Diaz spoke with My MMA News, and he offered this take on the all-star fight (quote via MMA Fighting):

“As far as MMA, I want to say there’s maybe five guys that do jiu-jitsu that have an actual level of understanding when it comes to boxing. He obviously does. I feel like, if he can hit my brother he can definitely can put up somewhat of a fight with Floyd, if not actually bring him an actual challenge,” Diaz said.

That’s an interesting point, as Nick’s brother Nate, has received plenty of praise for his boxing abilities. Further, both of the Diaz brothers spar with pro-boxers, including one of the greatest pugilists on the planet, Andre Ward.

But, Diaz also had this to say about McGregor’s bouts with his brother Nate, while considering what will happen on August 26th:

“I don’t know what’s gonna happen. I could say one thing, I could be wrong. Also, the ups and downs of life, you never know what’s going on. Either one of these guys could have a bad – like the last time my brother fought he had broken ribs, torn rib tissue. Neither one of those fights worked out for him. He had 13 days the first time and the next time he was injured. I was there for it.”

There you have it. Mayweather – McGregor aside, as it stands right now, it’s not clear when either Nick or Nate Diaz will fight again. Hopefully that changes soon.

Might we see a rubber match between McGregor and Diaz at some juncture?
