Shooto champion Willamy “Chiquerim” Freire has signed with the UFC, and will make his Octagon debut against fellow lightweight Thiago Tavares on the preliminary card of UFC on Versus 2 on August 1 in Salt Lake City, Freire’s manager, Andre Pederneiras, today announced to Gracie Mag.
Freire (17-2) has won 11-straight bouts, most-recently retaining the Shooto title with a split decision win over Yusuke Endo on May 30.
Tavares (14-3-1) snapped a two-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision over Manny Gamburyan in January 2009, then ended a yearlong layoff in January with a draw against Nik Lentz before an elbow injury forced him to withdraw from a May matchup with Melvin Guillard.
UFC on Versus 2 is headlined by Jon Jones vs. Vladimir Matyushenko, and also features Mark Munoz vs. Yushin Okami, John Howard vs. Jake Ellenberger, and Joe Stevenson vs. Takanori Gomi.
