The expectation is that Georges St-Pierre will fight Michael Bisping next, but Luke Rockhold isn’t so convinced the former welterweight champ will fight for the 185 belt this fall.
If you’ve followed all the drama regarding Bisping – GSP this year, then you know the UFC had the bout planned, before ‘cancelling’ it, after St-Pierre relayed he couldn’t fight until November. But, more recently, as a result of a knee injury to middleweight interim champ Robert Whittaker, and a shoulder injury for the welterweight champ Tyron Woodley, Bisping – GSP is back in play.
Well, one man who has repeatedly called for another bout with the middleweight champ is Mr. Rockhold. The latter submitted Bisping back in 2014, before the British star ended his reign has champ last June, by knocking him out in the opening round. Up next, Rockhold will fight David Branch on September 16th, but during a recent episode of “The MMA Hour”, the AKA fighter had this to say about Bisping – GSP (quotes via MMA Mania):
“Who knows at this point. Georges has been out a long time, and I can only control what’s in front of me which is September 16, I am going to go do my job and put myself in line.”
“There will be a fight in November, but we just don’t know who. You never know if it’s Georges. Who knows if Georges is going to make a fight. At this stage of the game and all of the things he’s been through you can’t expect that he’s going to show up to that date,” said Rockhold.
“His body might fail, his mind might fail. There are a lot of things in question with Georges.”
It’s certainly true that it remains to be seen if GSP will get through his camp unscathed, and will be ready to fight Bisping (the fight isn’t official for November, but it’s believed the UFC is looking at November 4th for Bisping – St.Pierre). So, if Rockhold can score an impressive win over Branch next month, then, one would think the former champ will be on the short list as a replacement. No question.
