Recently Anthony Johnson said that Jon Jones would be too much for Volkan Oezdemir, but the heavy handed fighter says his teammate is incorrect….
During a recent appearance on “The MMA Hour”, Johnson was asked to weigh-in on how a fight between Jones and Oezdemir would go. Although most believe that Alexander Gustafsson will be next for Jones, Oezdemir has bombed his way into the title shot conversation, thanks to quick, KO wins over Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa.
Although Johnson credited Oezdemir for his toughness, and said the light-heavyweight’s “the real deal”, “Rumble” also relayed that Jones is on “another level”. So, according to Johnson, Oezdemir would not be able to hand Jones his first, real defeat.
Well, since then, Bloody Elbow has caught up with Oezdemir. When asked to respond to Johnson’s comments, “No Time” said this:
“I totally understand what he said about Jones in perspective to having his belt back; he is the king of the UFC — No. 1 pound-for-pound — so obviously he is suppose to destroy everybody in the world,” Oezdemir said. “I agree that Jones is on another level in the sense of his media impact.
“However, when speaking about fighting, I totally disagree. I will knock Jones out for the first time of his UFC career. I have a profound confidence in my fighting abilities, I don’t need someone to validate me because I know I will dominate this division.”
There you have. Oezdemir certainly isn’t short on confidence these days, but, due to what he’s accomplished thus far in the Octagon, it’s not surprising.
At the end of the day, however, most people are likely in agreement with Johnson on this. Oezdemir has showcased devastating power, and lot of people would like to see if could test the chin of Jones. But the latter is widely considered to be one of the greatest fighters of all time, and is ridiculously well rounded. So, for now, Oezdemir would be sizeable underdog if they were booked to fight.
