Nate Diaz Believes Conor McGregor Has a “Great Chance” Against Floyd Mayweather

UFC

Nate Diaz has traded plenty of verbal and physical shots with Conor McGregor over the last year or so, but the Stockton star isn’t dismissing his rival’s chances of scoring an upset, Saturday. In fact, according to Diaz, the UFC lightweight champ has a pretty decent chance of handing Floyd Mayweather his first pro defeat.

Unless you’re brand new to MMA, then you know that Diaz and McGregor fought twice in 2016. In their first battle, last March, Diaz won the bout via a second round, rear-naked-choke. In the August rematch, however, McGregor outstruck Diaz for the majority decision win (although Diaz has argued that he in fact won that bout).

Due to Diaz’s history with McGregor, and because he’s received a ton of praise over the years for his boxing skills, he’s a good person to approach about this Saturday’s all-star bout. During a recent episode of Against All Odds With Cousin Sal, Diaz had this to say about McGregor’s chances against Mayweather (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I think he has a great chance,” Diaz said.

“I’ve fought the top pros in the fight game, the best fighters in the world, and done better than a lot of them,” Diaz added. “I fought Conor for 25 minutes, I believe he’s definitely going to have a chance. Fighting and beating the best boxer pound for pound in the world right now? That’s another story but a fight’s a fight and we’re going to have to watch and see what happens. Hopefully it will be a hell of a fight.”

The outspoken fighter also had this to say, regarding what the boxing world will say, if McGregor wins:

“What happens when Conor wins, let’s say he wins, and all this sh*t these boxers talk, aww all this sh*t, oh you thought you knew but you don’t know sh*t because you say stuff like he doesn’t stand a chance. They should know, being fighters, in a fight, everyone stands a chance, and if they’re saying that there’s no chance, that’s a problem…”

Yup. If McGregor does emerge victorious, it’s going to very, very interesting to see what the boxing pundits, who said the Irish star had zero chance, say.

Mayweather and McGregor will throw hands at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, August 26th.
