Coach Says Nate Diaz Needs “at Least $20, $30 Million” for Third Bout With Conor McGregor

UFC

There’s  a lot of talk these days about Conor McGregor – Nate Diaz III, but if the latter’s one the same page as his boxing coach, in terms of what he should get paid, chances are the bout won’t happen…

Now that McGregor’s all-star fight with Floyd Mayweather is over, everyone and their dog is debating what’s next for the UFC’s lightweight champ. Since McGregor made a guaranteed $30 million for the bout with Mayweather, and is going to get a cut of the reported 6.5 million pay-per-view buys as well, the consensus is that a third fight with Diaz is likely. The argument being that fights with Tony Ferguson, Kevin Lee or Khabib Nurmagomedov won’t generate nearly as much money for the lightweight champ. Neither would a third scrap with Diaz, but right now, it’s probably the biggest money fight for McGregor.

Well, recently Diaz’s boxing coach, Richard Perez, was a guest on Submission Radio. Clearly he understands that a rubber match between Diaz and McGregor would be a pretty big deal. Perez had this to say, while discussing what the Stockton star should collect for the fight (quote via MMA Fighting):

“At least $20 million, $30 million,” Perez said. “Come on. UFC’s making a whole lot of money, a whole lot of money and they’re pocketing it. They’re giving more to McGregor, so it’s not fair because it takes two in that ring to draw a crowd – I mean, a good two fighters. It’s just like Mayweather when he fought Berto. It was not even sold out at all. It was embarrassing. It’s because that guy couldn’t draw a crowd. See, that’s what I’m saying, it’s the fighters that draw the crowd, and Nathan and McGregor, third one would be outstanding. Everyone knows that. So he needs to get paid at least $30 million easy.”

You can understand why Perez wants to see Diaz score a massive, massive payday. But, the chances of the UFC paying Diaz even close to that much money are slim and none. Prior to McGregor’s bout with Mayweather, the highest, guaranteed purse he had was $3 million.

But, there’s no doubt that if the UFC wants McGregor – Diaz III to happen, they’re going to have make a sizeable offer to the latter.
