On account of Malignaggi’s highly publicized departure from McGregor’s training camp, and all the drama that ensued, there was considerable talk about the two boxing in the future. But, since McGregor was stopped by Mayweather, and because Dana White’s made it clear he wants to see the star back in the Octagon, many folks have moved on.
Well, Malignaggi was recently a guest on the “MMA Hour”, and the retired boxer reported he’s very much interested in boxing McGregor (quote via MMA Fighting):
“I’m willing to risk fighting him for free just to punch him in the mouth again, again and again,” Malignaggi said“That’s how confident I am he can’t beat me. I’d make it winner take all just for the pleasure of putting my fist in his teeth again…”
“I think once you get the hang of it, once you get the hang of what Conor is doing, you start to break him. And as I’ve said from the start, this guy is not the bravest guy in the world,” Malignaggi added later. “There’s a lot of punk in this guy. He’s a loud guy, he’s a brash guy. Honestly, in MMA he has the advantage most of the time, because he is talented. You have to give him that, he is talented. But a fighter is a fighter when faced with adversity. Not in round one, not when he’s talking at a press conference.”
So, clearly Malignaggi’s not interested in moving on at this juncture, but, the chances of this bout happening anytime soon are slim. Unless McGregor absolutely insists on fighting Malignaggi next, it’s hard to imagine the UFC signing off on this.
The Irish fighter hasn’t fought in the Octagon now since last November, when he won the 155 title by stopping Eddie Alvarez. So, after a year where the UFC hasn’t had too many, big time cards, they need to get McGregor back in the cage.
