So Rafael dos Anjos Was in The Mix to Fight Tyron Woodley at UFC 214…

UFC 215

Demian Maia battled Tyron Woodley at UFC 214 in July, but as it turns out, Rafael dos Anjos was reportedly in the mix to fight for the welterweight title…

Maia was booked to fight Woodley at the July 29th card, which was approximately six weeks after the vaunted grappler earned a decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 211. Woodley ended up defending the 170 crown via a clear cut, UD victory.

Well, recently Sean Shelby did a “Watch List” segment for this coming Saturday’s UFC 215 card in Edmonton. During the video, Shelby relayed the following news (quote via Bloody Elbow):

“What’s interesting about this, is that we obviously had a fight with Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia,” Shelby said. “Dana made it public that Tyron is fighting on this card. Maia wasn’t initially sure if he was going to do it, and the guy waiting there for that fight was RDA. He had already accepted the fight against Tyron, had Maia not been able to do it.

“So he’s been ready to go. He’s been chomping at the bit, and he wants to fight every week. I said, ‘hey, it didn’t work out, but I’ll try to get you back in something fun as soon as possible.’

This is pretty surprising to hear right? While yes, dos Anjos is a former lightweight champ, prior to his decision win over Tarec Saffiedine in June, the Brazilian lost back-to-back bouts to Eddie Alvarez and Tony Ferguson. So, to hear that he was close to fighting for a title is kind of surprising, even if the UFC might have been in a bind to find Woodley an opponent. If they had gone that route, you have to wonder what the fan and fighter reaction would have been.

All this aside, RDA will take on welterweight contender Neil Magny at UFC 215. Magny earned a decision win over Johny Hendricks in his last bout, and he’s gone 4-1 in his last 5 fights.
