Tyron Woodley Discusses Plans for Shoulder Injury, Says There’s no “Clear-Cut #1 Contender” at 170

After Tyron Woodley’s decision win over Demian Maia in July, the welterweight champ revealed he injured his shoulder in the bout, and now he’s discussing his plans for the setback.

Woodley drew fire from critics (and UFC boss man Dana White) for his performance against Maia, as they believed the powerful wrestler could have finished the vaunted grappler. But, then Woodley reported he hurt his shoulder early on in the fight, and as a result, he couldn’t go full out.

Since then, Woodley has also said he wants to avoid having surgery if he can, and while talking to Sirius XM recently, the champ said this (quote via MMA Mania):

“Obviously, if I can avoid going under the knife, I obviously want to try to do that. So that’s my option right now. I tore my left labrum in 2008. At that time, I wasn’t really financially set up to go out and get PRP and stem cell, and I didn’t have insurance at that time, so my options were really limited. I had to wait like two or three years to get it done because I didn’t have insurance. Long story short, it’s gonna be a minute before I’m out in the Octagon, which almost works to the division’s credit because the deck needs to be shuffled a little bit more. There’s no real and true clear-cut number one contender right now, and once these fights take place and these guys get out there and compete, doing a training camp and fight, the world champ will just be getting back in the mix. So it’s perfect timing.”

It’s kind of hard to argue with Woodley here. Unless Conor McGregor comes calling, or Georges St-Pierre wants a quick turn around fight, after facing Michael Bisping on November 4th, there’s no fight that pops out right now for Woodley. Sure, some would say Robbie Lawler, but Woodley knocked him out just last July, and the former champ only has one win since then. Contenders #1 and #3, Stephen Thompson and Demian Maia respectively, Woodley’s already defeated.
