Coach Believes Jon Jones Could be Done Fighting if He’s Hit With Four-Year Suspension

It remains to be seen how long Jon Jones will be sidelined, as a result of his latest issue with USADA, which could see him suspended for up to four years. According to one of his coaches, however, if the latter happens, that could bring an end to the decorated fighter’s career.

Earlier this week it was announced that Jones’ B sample from UFC 214 has also come back positive for the anabolic steroid, Turinabol, and as a result, his July 29th win over Daniel Cormier has been overturned. As a result, the UFC has reinstated Cormier as the 205 champ, as officially speaking, Jones no longer holds a win over “DC”.

Since Jones was suspended by USADA for a year already, he is facing a multi-year suspension, as noted above. Recently one of his striking coaches, the renowned Mike Winkeljohn, was a guest on Submission Radio. When asked for his thoughts on what it could mean for Jones’ career, if he’s suspended for four years, Winkeljohn said this (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“If it’s a four-year thing, I think it could be just that kind of devastation (that stops Jon from coming back), and which like I said, it’s not fair, you know?” Winkeljohn said.  “He messed up in that maybe he took something that someone said was fine, but he’s not doing it thinking, “I’m taking steroids or something,” you know, and that’s the part that’s terrible, he’d be devastated at four years.”

“Who knows, you know? Just, that’s just a long time to just spiral downhill, where bad things can happen. So that one scares me. If it’s a year (suspension) Jon Jones will come back and dominate the world again, I do believe.”

When you consider Jones is 30 year’s old, then, it is hard to imagine him coming back at the age of 34, and being the force that he has been. Further, you have to wonder if Jones would even continue to focus on fighting, if he knew he couldn’t compete for four years.

The length of his suspension, however, will likely come down to whether Jones and his team can prove he unknowingly took a contaminated product. Jones has denied using any type of steroid.
