Barring an unforeseen change, Chris Weidman won’t be fighting for the middleweight title next like he hoped. But, according to the manager of fellow contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, a bout with the Brazilian star could happen.
After Weidman submitted Kelvin Gastelum in July, he campaigned for a bout with Bisping, but the middleweight champ’s going to fight Georges St-Pierre on November 4th. Recently Souza’s manager, Gilberto Faria, spoke with MMA Fighting, and he had this to say about his client’s next bout:
“I believe that Weidman might be the next fight, in late-December or early-January, if that’s a good date for the UFC to book this fight,” Faria said. “When we get closer to that date, we’ll see more clearly what the options are for Jacare’s next opponent.”
Weidman – Souza would certainly make sense, considering the interim champ Robert Whittaker is waiting in the wings to face the winner of Bisping – GSP. Although, with Luke Rockhold having returned to the win column, maybe the UFC will look at Weidman – Rockhold II?
