Thiago Alves Cleared to Return, Rematch with Jon Fitch Signed for UFC 117

Thiago AlvesUFC welterweight Thiago Alves is set to finally rematch fellow contender Jon Fitch on August 7 at UFC 117 after recently being cleared to return from successful brain surgery that scrapped the bout from March’s UFC 111.

A knee injury to Alves postponed the rematch from December’s UFC 107, then their UFC 111 matchup was scrapped after Alves was suspended indefinitely for failing a pre-fight CT scan with a brain irregularity.

After undergoing successful surgery in April, Alves was today cleared to return by New Jersey and has signed to face Fitch on the pay-per-view main card at UFC 117 in Oakland, California, according to MMAjunkie.

Alves (16-6) rebounded from a second-round TKO loss to Fitch in 2006 with a seven fight win streak over the likes of Josh Koscheck and Matt Hughes before falling to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre last July, while Fitch (22-3) has earned four-straight unanimous decision wins since losing to St-Pierre in 2008.

UFC 117 is headlined by middleweight champ Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen and also features Roy Nelson vs. Junior dos Santos and Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida.
