Stipe Miocic Talks Timeline For Return, Why Bout With Cain Velasquez Would be “Amazing”

Stipe Miocic doesn’t have his next bout booked just yet, but the heavyweight champ’s reporting his management team is in talks with the UFC.

If you don’t follow Miocic closely, then you may be unaware that the fighter’s been sitting out, until he gets a new deal from the UFC. This is one of the reasons Miocic hasn’t been scheduled for another scrap, since he took out Junior dos Santos back in May.

Well, the heavy handed fighter appeared on the latest “MMA Hour” this week, and Miocic reported the following, regarding his contract dispute with the promotion (quote via MMA Fighting):

“We’re talking,” Miocic said. “I’m probably looking at December or the end of January.

“Definitely, it’s all good,” he added. “I’ve got a great management team and they’re doing everything they’re supposed to. We’re talking; it’s all good.”

Now, if they can come to terms on a new deal, the big question is, who’s Miocic going to fight? There’s been a lot of talk about handing Francis Ngannou a title shot, since the heavyweight has gone 5-0 to date in the UFC, and has finished each opponent he’s faced in the Octagon

Some have raised the question, however, whether Ngannou has enough buzz behind him yet, to secure a title shot. But, Miocic said he’s down to fight Ngannou, who he called a “great up-and-comer”, and he also mentioned Alistair Overeem and Alexander Volkov as possible opponents.

Miocic was also asked about Cain Velasquez, as for some time, there’s been talk about how a fight between those two would go down. Recently the former champ relayed, however, that he’s only at about “80%”, as a result of issues with his back.  Miocic said the following, while discussing Velasquez:

“It would have been great to fight him because it would have been an amazing fight between us too.”

“We’re both wrestlers, we both push the pace, we’ve got great cardio and we like to stand and bang – it would have been an exciting fight. Unfortunately, he’s hurt right now. I hope he gets better because he’s a super nice guy.”

One would think, since Velasquez has only fought twice since 2013 at this point, that he’ll need to score a comeback win before getting tapped for a title shot. So, don’t be surprised if Miocic – Ngannou gets booked for sometime in the coming months.
