Michael Bisping Calls Yushin Okami’s Loss to OSP “Absolutely Amateurish”

Yushin Okami

Following Ovince Saint Preux’s quick, submission win over Yushin Okami last night at UFC Fight Night Japan, Michael Bisping certainly didn’t lay off the former middleweight contender.

Okami agreed to face the light-heavyweight contender on just a few days notice, after OSP’s original opponent, “Shogun” Rua, dropped out due to a knee injury. Okami, who has competed as low as welterweight in the last year, shot in moments into the fight. Saint Preux sprawled, and after Okami failed to sweep the dangerous fighter, he was eventually choked unconscious by a Von Flue Choke.

Well, if you’ve followed OSP’s UFC run, then you know that the Von Flue Choke is one of his go to moves. As a result, Bisping had this to say about Okami’s performance, during the FXX post-fight show (quote via MMA Junkie):

“If you are Yushin Okami, and you watch any footage of Ovince Saint Preux, if you’ve seen his last fight, he got the Von Flue,” Bisping said. “He’s had it before. What do you try to do? Rule 101, you don’t try to guillotine him from side control on your back. And he did that. … It was just crazy that he even did that. But I’m sorry, Yushin Okami, I have a lot of respect for you, but it was madness. It was absolutely amateurish. Shut the door on your way out.”

“Okami obviously didn’t watch any tape whatsoever,” Bisping added. “If he did, he would have known not to grab the head. … It’s an amateur move. It’s a stalling measure. There’s no submission for Okami on his back there. If you’re grabbing from there, you’re just trying to hold on. It was a terrible, terrible decision for Okami.”

It definitely wasn’t one of Okami’s finest outings, especially when you consider there was a time when the Judoka was one of the toughest outs in the UFC’s middleweight division.

But, the 36 year-old did agree to face OSP on just a few days notice, two weight classes above where he’s been competing. So, maybe he does deserve a bit of a pass here. Bisping apparently added later in the segment that he thinks Okami should be given another bout in the UFC.

The fight marked the first time since 2013 that Okami fought in the Octagon.
