Santiago Ponzinibbio admits fighting Mike Perry wasn’t on his radar, and now that he’s going to throw hands with the rising welterweight at UFC on FOX 26, he’s excited about the match-up. Despite the fact he’s never seen “Platinum” throw hands…
Recently the UFC announced that Ponzinibbio and Perry are going to battle on December 16th, at the promotion’s next FOX card in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It’s a fascinating match-up on a couple of levels. Ponzinibbio has gone 7-2 to date in the Octagon, and has won five in a row. Perry, meanwhile, is 4-1 in the UFC, and has won back-to-back bouts.
It’s also an intriguing fight due to the aggressive style of both men, and the power they possess. Ponzinibbio has recorded four stoppage wins in the Octagon, and Perry has done the same. Recently the Argentinian fighter spoke with MMA Fighting, and while discussing his upcoming bout with Perry, Ponzinibbio said this:
“I wanted to fight (Carlos) Condit, (Rafael) dos Anjos, but unfortunately it didn’t happen,” Ponzinibbio said. “I have to stay active. I want to stay in rhythm. Perry is on a roll and promotes his fights well, and I think this will be great.
“Honestly, I never watched even one of his fights. I have to watch it now. I wasn’t eyeing this fight, to be honest with you. I was thinking about Condit, dos Anjos, (Donald) Cerrone. They were my options, but it didn’t happen. But this fight is good. I’ll study his fights and see what he brings, and based on that I will prepare my strategy and train for that.”
Considering the buzz that Perry’s been generating, it’s a little surprising to hear that Ponzinibbio hasn’t seen him fight. Although, some fighters don’t follow the sport like hardcore fans, and only watch tape on their opponents as camp kicks into high gear.
Ponzinibbio also noted that as per usual, he’ll be bringing the heat when he takes on Perry. The 31 year-old also warned that whoever he faces, if “he doesn’t go down, I will hurt him.”
We shall see. That’s definitely a fight you don’t want to miss. UFC on FOX 26 will be hosted by the MTS Centre.
