A lot of fans are likely expecting a pretty entertaining stand-up battle between Donald Cerrone and Darren Till this weekend at UFC Fight Night 118. But, according to the latter, Cerrone isn’t going to want anything to do with him on the feet.
Till has been booked for the high stakes fight, which will also headline Saturday’s event, due to a 4-0-1 run in the UFC. The British fighter has also been making headlines on account of his self promoting abilities. Case in point, the 24 year-old has proclaimed that he’s the best striker in the welterweight division.
So, it could be on account of this confidence, that Till recently said the following about Cerrone, and their bout this weekend (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“Do not stand with me, you will die.”
“Donald Cerrone is going to take me down. He’s coming to take me down. He’s too old and fragile to be standing with a guy like me,” Till added.
“C’mon, look at the f**kin’ size of me for f**k’s sake! I’m twice his size, how the f**k is he going to strike with me? He’s coming to take me down, that’s his game plan.
“I don’t fault him for that. He’s getting old and he’s twice my age. Do not stand with me, you will die.”
Wow. Those are some pretty bold statements, and ones that Cerrone, his camp, and his numerable fans likely aren’t going to care for.
Now, does Till really believe this? In so far that he really believes he’s that much better than Cerrone on the feet? Perhaps. But, when you consider that Cerrone has taken out the likes of Rick Story, Patrick Cote and Matt Brown during his run at 170, this could be some pre-fight, mental warfare. In other words, an attempt by Till to get Cerrone riled up, and forget about trying to take him down.
The 34 year-old star is more so known for this striking pedigree, but Cerrone does have some nice takedowns and subs in his arsenal. If Till can defeat Cerrone, however, he could be one more win away from a title shot.
UFC Fight Night 118 will take place in Gdansk, Poland.
