Conor McGregor received a lot of praise for the boxing skills he showcased in his bout with Floyd Mayweather. But, Cody Garbrandt says he’d bomb out his fellow UFC champ, if they threw hands in the ring…
McGregor was eventually stopped by Mayweather in their August 26th bout, but a lot of people had him ahead in the early going. As a result, plenty of folks, even observers from boxing, credited McGregor’s boxing pedigree after the contest.
“I think going in a boxing ring with Conor would be great, or in MMA. . . No ill will towards the guy but I actually believe I’m a better boxer. I feel like I’m one of the best boxers in the UFC.”
“I’ll go in there and knock Conor the f**k out in a boxing ring, just to be honest. There’s no difference, southpaw, orthodox, that guy could come out and fight on his hands for all I give a f**k. I would knock him out, that’s it. I have the best boxing in the game, in the UFC, and I’m ready to showcase it on another level.”
Now if you’re thinking that’s quite the bold statement from Garbrandt, well, it is, but it’s worth noting that he went 32-0 in amateur boxing. So, it’s not surprising to hear that he’s more than confident in his hands. Plus, we’re talking about a guy who has showcased some pretty nasty striking in the Octagon as well.
But, McGregor boosters would likely counter with the fact that the Irish star is much bigger than Garbrandt, and that he’s spent a ton of time in the last year or so, focusing on his boxing.
Of course, all this talk’s for not, as there’s slim to no chance that Garbrandt and McGregor will ever box.
Garbrandt continues to prepare for his November 4th bout with former champ, TJ Dillashaw, which will go down at UFC 217 in New York City.
