If you’re on of the fans who wants to see Conor McGregor get on with his MMA career again, and put boxing on the shelf for the time being, well, it looks like Dana White’s on your team…
Recently talk surrounding McGregor has mostly been about who he’ll fight in his Octagon return. But, then Paulie Malignaggi claimed that Al Haymon’s been in contact with White about a boxing match between him, and the lightweight champ. Since Malignaggi departed McGregor’s training camp for his bout with Floyd Mayweather in August, the retired boxer’s made it clear he’s more than willing to meet the Irish star in a boxing match.
Well, Malignaggi’s recent comments about the possibility of a fight with McGregor were certainly met with mixed reviews. After all, it’s been over a year now since McGregor has fought in the UFC, and now Tony Ferguson is waiting in the wings, armed with an interim belt. Not to mention Mr. Nate Diaz and a rubber match.
“Paulie Malignaggi never says (expletive) that isn’t true,” Dana White reportedly said with a sarcastic tone. “Do you think people really want to see Conor vs. Paulie Malignaggi? People want to see Conor fight in MMA. That’s what they want to see. The Mayweather fight was a one-off, (expletive) crazy deal. This is where he belongs, this is the sport he’s in, this is the sport he excels in and this is where he’s a world champion. This is where he needs to be.”
Yup. There’s a lot of folks who are in agreement with White here. Now sure, if McGregor had pulled off the upset and defeated Mayweather in August, then chances are, we’d be talking about him possibly facing Canelo Alvarez, etc. But that didn’t happen. Further, for the sake of the UFC, the promotion needs their biggest star back in the Octagon, selling tickets and PPV buys,
