Colby Covington wasn’t exactly complimentary towards Demian Maia, at least publicly, leading up to their bout last night. But, after UFC Fight Night 119, Maia reported Covington gave him a heads up, that the trash talk was just to promote their fight.
Prior to Saturday’s bout, Covington promised to use the Brazilian star as a stepping stone to a title shot, and he also called the latter “dad-bod Maia”. After his clear cut, decision loss to Covington, however, Maia told the media this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“Since the beginning of the week, he said he respected me a lot, and he was promoting the fight, and that was his way of promoting,” said Maia. “He told me I’m a legend, and he admires me and he only does that for promoting.”
Maia also said that he did not hear Covington insult the Sao Paulo crowd afterwards, and added that he doesn’t care for that “style”. The outspoken welterweight, also publicly credited Maia after their memorable battle via Twitter.
